Mrs. Teresa Walker Price

HISTORIAN for the White Feather Historical and Educational Project

Miss Teresa was born to Tessie and William E. Jackson, Jr. (1888–1972), who was locally known as “Billpost” Jackson for his billboard advertising business. She was also the granddaughter of Nannie Cox Jackson, a beloved domestic science teacher at Jefferson School who generously supported both the school’s football team and the city lunch program. After graduating from Jefferson School in 1942, Miss Teresa attended Hampton Institute and, upon completing her final exams, returned to Charlottesville to begin teaching. She and her first husband, Henderson Day Walker, Sr., raised two sons who both became well-respected visual artists. Miss Teresa taught business and typing at Jackson P. Burley High School and, after becoming certified in library science, continued her career at Lane High School following integration. During desegregation, she provided support and introduced African American students to members of the African American community as well as to members of Trinity Episcopal Church. In 2019, she was honored with a Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Award, and on December 14, 2025, Mrs. Walker-Price will celebrate her 100th birthday.
